Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide legal representation to victims of domestic violence across a range of issues, including protection from abuse, child custody, support and any related matter of legal significance. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following range of services: litigating cases originating as domestic violence matters; conducting client interviews, making court appearances, representing clients in trials, and performing all necessary legal work; participating in program evaluation and planning to ensure that the Legal Center is improving the legal system’s response to battered women; and providing functional supervision of Legal Center staff and interns working on assigned cases. All responsibilities are implemented according to our mission and values and according to Agency standards, including the Sanctuary Model ®.

Qualifications:
A Juris Doctorate, with a current license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required.
Familiarity with the court system in regard to domestic violence issues is strongly preferred.
Experience with legal representation to victims of domestic violence is preferred.
Demonstrated excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills are required.
Demonstrated ability to effectively represent an advocacy agency or function is required.
Demonstrated ability to organize time and detail, including keeping of records is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population is required.
Demonstrated commitment to service of others is required.
Bilingualism, Spanish/English is strongly preferred.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week, flexibility needed.

Salary: commensurate with experience as well as a generous, comprehensive benefit package.

Location: Center City Philadelphia, local travel required.

With over 150 staff, WAA serves over 15,000 individuals each year through emergency residential services (2 - 100 bed safe havens and 15 transitional housing apartments), legal services, hotline counseling, aftercare community based services, prevention & education, and advocacy.

  • Modeling best practices: With funding from the Oak Foundation, we have substantially developed its property management infrastructure, enabling it to reduce costs and improve efficiencies across sites, while dedicating resources to advance its program and facilities expertise. This move has enabled us to better leverage resources, and prepared the organization for the coming expansion of emergency safe haven.
  • Capturing impact and client needs: we have upgraded our client information management system to ClientTrack, a database with enhanced quality control features and improved user friendliness. As a result, we are able to collect more data on outcomes and improve program performance.
  • In 2015 we became a Sanctuary ® Certified Organization. The Sanctuary® Model is an evidence-supported, trauma-informed organizational change approach to establishing an organizational culture that promotes healing, safety and empowerment for both clients and staff.

Awards and Recognition

  • 2018-2019 we received the Barra Award. These awards are given to exemplary nonprofit organizations working in the five-county Greater Philadelphia region that demonstrate great leadership, performance and adaptability. Each organization is actively involved in their communities, works deliberately and thoughtfully to improve their work and seeks to solve problems creatively. They continually strive to be better.
  • We received the Barry and Marie Lipman Family Prize in 2017, for our vision and leadership in pioneering Shared Safety: Philadelphia's Response to Relational Violence. We were the first nonprofit organization from Philadelphia to receive the Lipman Family Prize! Since 2012, this annual global prize has honored organizations that use innovative strategies to address social problems. 
  • In January 2017, our Executive Director and President Jeannine L. Lisitski won the Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal's Human Rights Social Innovator Award for her vision and leadership in pioneering Shared Safety: Philadelphia's Response to Relational Violence.
